Its striking modern lines are a fitting tribute to Eileen Gray, the Irish designer and architect who adopted the cafés and salons of Paris as her home. The elegantly patterned stainless-steel frame is easy on the eyes but also protects the glass jug within, and the squared handle is easy to grip even when the press is full of boiling water. The French press brewing method prevents scorching of the beans, and because there's no filter involved, all of the flavorful oils stay in the drink. Simply measure out one rounded tablespoon of coarsely ground coffee per 4-ounce cup, pour very hot (not boiling) water over it, let the contents brew for at least 4 minutes, then slowly depress the plunger. This particular press even includes a coffee scoop and a timer to make the brewing process easy. --Mary Park
